cadavre exquis
a project underway…
the concept
new zealand was the first country to see the dawn of the new millennium, and here just as all over the world projects were started to celebrate that moment.
at muka studio we thought about the fact that artists sign their prints adding the date. then we came up with the idea of creating a body of work with 366 artists from all around the world producing each one lithograph and claiming one the days of the year 2000 for its signing.
the 366 lithographs will be exhibited as a whole.
they will be hung onto museum walls following the order of the date of the signatures.
the collection will constitute an installation where artistic statements made at the beginning of this millennium will freely confront, contradict and complement each other.
as a whole it will be a comment on our age of (non-)-communication.
we see it in the line of what the surrealists called a "cadavre exquis"
conveniently an electronic catalogue of all 366 works and written artist's statements will be available at the exhibitions.
it is physically and economically impossible to invite all 366 artists actually working in our studio in new zealand, therefore everything is done by mail
having most artists to draw on transfer paper from which the image is transferred to lithographic stone.:
the images are small, 225mmx165mm; (vertical or portrait) printed on white arches 88 paper, size 285mmx215mm.
only two colors are used, black and buff (Pantone 4545)
so far we have contributions by artists from
aruba, australia, bangladesh, belgium, canada, colombia, cuba, curaçao, denmark, dominican republic, france, germany, great bBritain, greece, hungary, iceland, israel, italy, japan, korea, mexico, niue island, new zealand, poland, slovenia, spain, sweden, switzerland, the netherlands, usa, vietnam
